Patrick Henry Hughes was born blind and without the ability to fully straighten his arms and legs, making him unable to walk. Additionally, two steel rods were surgically attached to Patrick’s spine to correct scoliosis.

Despite the overwhelming circumstances, Patrick has overcome his physical issues to excel as a musician and student. He is usually a straight ‘A’ student, having received only 5 ‘B’s’ since 6th grade up to and including his sophomore year of college.

Too Old To Die Young

If life is like a candle bright
Death must be the wind
You can close
Your window tight
And it still comes flowing in
So I will climb the highest hill
And watch the rising sun
And I pray that I
Don’t feel the chill
Till I’m too old to die young

Let me watch my children grow
To see what they become
Oh Lord don’t let
That cold wind blow
Till I’m too old to die young

Tongue Control Gives Hope To Disabled

August 27th, 2008

The tireless tongue already controls taste and speech, helps kiss and swallow and fights germs. Now scientists hope to add one more ability to the mouthy muscle, and turn it into a computer control pad.

Georgia Tech researchers believe a magnetic, tongue-powered system could transform a disabled person’s mouth into a virtual computer, teeth into a keyboard - and tongue into the key that manipulates it all.

“You could have full control over your environment by just being able to move your tongue,” said Maysam Ghovanloo, a Georgia Tech assistant professor who leads the team’s research.

August 24th, 2008

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.

“Mister,” he said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.”

“Well,” said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, “these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money.”

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He had been a fine craftsman building many houses over his career. All the house owners were proud to live in the beautiful houses he built.

The carpenter told his employer-contractor of his plans to leave the house-building business. He wanted to live a more leisurely life with his wife and enjoy his extended family. Sure he would miss the paycheck each week, but he had some savings and the children were all grown up. They would chip in so he and his wife could get by.

Thankful

I am thankful for everything
That you two have done
I am sure it was quite stressful
And at times, not much fun

From the ninja turtle phase
To all the baseball gear
You always found a way
To make sure I never finished in the rear

I know I don’t show it often
But most of your knowledge was caught
And now that I am raising my own kids
I find myself quoting you a lot

I know sometimes it was tough
And we may of said some things we didn’t mean
But even to this day
I wouldn’t change a thing
