Limbe Wildlife Centre caretaker Jonathan Kang, who overcame a lack of formal education growing up in his native Cameroon to become one of Africa’s top primate experts, has recently been selected as a Disney Conservation Hero. The programme rewards the dedication of individuals who, often at the risk of personal safety, work tirelessly to save animals, protect habitat and educate surrounding communities.
The Wildlife Centre is situated in the small fishing town of Limbe at the foot of Mount Cameroon and is jointly run by the The Pandrillus Foundation, a non-governmental organisation working to conserve its fragile eco-systems. With no legal protected status, the region suffers from unlawful logging and high levels of poaching for the bush meat trade. The infant primates that are too small to have any value as meat, are sold on as pets.
The Centre currently cares for 48 rescued chimpanzees, 11 gorillas and several other primate species. Open for visitors, it provides one of the few opportunities for local people to see and learn about these special animals and all the critical conservation issues that are affecting them.
