Thankful

August 22nd, 2008
the streets of your townImage by orvalrochefort via Flickr

I am thankful for everything
That you two have done
I am sure it was quite stressful
And at times, not much fun

From the ninja turtle phase
To all the baseball gear
You always found a way
To make sure I never finished in the rear

I know I don’t show it often
But most of your knowledge was caught
And now that I am raising my own kids
I find myself quoting you a lot

I know sometimes it was tough
And we may of said some things we didn’t mean
But even to this day
I wouldn’t change a thing

Shooting Hoops Is Easy

Last week, I was playing basketball alone in my court, shooting the hoops. It was easy but after 30 minutes, it gets really boring because there’s no competition. When someone’s blocking me to shoot, it’ll get MORE difficult and there’s where the fun begins. Conclusion, games or sports are not fun if there are no challenges.

I used to whine when I’m facing obstacles for my internet businesses but when I start taking the metaphor of playing a game, I’m no longer that frustrated anymore. If you can treat doing business like playing a game, will you see things differently now?

Nintendo is banned everywhere but the classroom at Tokyo Joshi Gakuen school in Japan as the ubiquitous DS consoles become the latest tool in English instruction.

Junior high school teacher Motoko Okubo has used the handheld DS and textbook software since May in weekly sessions focusing on vocabulary, penmanship and audio comprehension.

With years of games such as Super Mario on the prohibited list, she says students weren’t expecting the Nintendo welcome.

“They’ve been using it at home playing games, so at first they were surprised they can use it at school,” Okubo said.

Your Happiness Project: Read Something For Fun

Four children reading the book How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss.

I’m working on my Happiness Project, and you should have one, too! Everyone’s project will look different, but it’s the rare person who can’t benefit. Join in — no need to catch up, just jump in right now. Each Friday’s post will help you think about your own happiness project.

This week — read something for fun!

I’ve noticed something when I ask people what they’re reading: they often name some highly estimable, dense, serious book, and then confess that they’ve been reading it for months.

Two Frogs

June 15th, 2008
A fossilized frog, from Bechlejovice in the Czech Republic. (Possibly Palaeobatrachus gigas)

A group of frogs were traveling through the woods. They were laughing and having fun when suddenly two of them fell into a deep pit.

The pit was so deep that the other frogs started yelling to the two frogs who had fallen, “Oh dear! You’re as good as dead. The pit is so deep there is no way you’re getting out of it.”

The two frogs were frantically trying to jump up out of the pit with all their might that they ignored the comments. But the other frogs kept telling them, “Didn’t you hear us? You’re as good as dead. You just can’t jump out of the pit. You might as well stop trying now.”
