To keep the heart unwrinkled, to be hopeful, kindly, cheerful, reverent that is to triumph over old age.

Mountain Echo

August 13th, 2008
Mount Damavand in winter, Iran.Image via Wikipedia

A son and his father were walking on the mountains.

Suddenly, the son fell, hurt himself and screamed, “AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!” To his surprise, he heard a voice repeating somewhere in the mountain: “AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!”

Curious, he yelled, “Who are you?” He received the answer, “Who are you?”

And then he screamed to the mountain, “I admire you!” The voice answered, “I admire you!”

Angered at the voice kept on repeating what he said, the son screamed, “Coward!” He received the answer, “Coward!”

He looked to his father and asked, “What’s going on?”

The Pencil Maker took the pencil aside, just before putting him into the box.

“There are 5 things you need to know,” he told the pencil, “Before I send you out into the world. Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best pencil you can be.

“One: You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in someone’s hand.

“Two: You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you’ll need it to become a better pencil.

There was a rich merchant who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best.

He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He’s very proud of her and always wanted to show off her to his friends. However, the merchant is always in great fear that she might run away with some other men.

As The Music Plays

June 14th, 2008

As the music plays
my heart aches
it aches with pain
pain of the past
and pain of the present

As the music plays
my heart aches
it aches with hurt
hurt that I have caused
and hurt that has been caused

As the music plays
my heart aches
it aches with passion
passion that yearns
and passion that wants

As the music plays
my heart aches
it aches with love
love that will never be shared
and love that will never be known

As the music stops
my heart no longer aches
it doesn’t feel anything
the music has stopped
and so has everything else.

Moving Heart

Two men were arguing about a flag flapping in the wind.

“It’s the wind that is really moving,” stated the first one.

“No, it is the flag that is moving,” contended the second.

A Zen master, who happened to be walking by, overheard the debate and interrupted them.

“Neither the flag nor the wind is moving,” he said, “It’s the HEART that moves.”

Zen Stories To Tell Your Neighbors

Key To The Heart

April 22nd, 2008

Heart lived in a very secured house with an unbreakable lock.

One day, the cocky Crowbar came to visit Heart.

“If you can open the lock, you can come in,” Heart told Crowbar.

“No problem. I’ll meet you in a jiffy,” Crowbar sounded confident. Being strong, he thought he could break open the lock in no time. But no matter how hard he chiseled and hammered, the lock wouldn’t budge.

His friend Saw who came with him couldn’t bear it any longer, “Oh, come on! You can’t even break a little lock. Why don’t you step aside and let THE man do it?”

Most Beautiful Heart

April 20th, 2008

One day, a young man was standing in the middle of the town proclaiming that he had the most beautiful heart. It was perfect. There was not a mark or a flaw in it.

Suddenly, an old man appeared and said, “Your heart is not nearly as beautiful as mine.”

The young man looked at the old man’s heart. It was beating strongly, but it was full of scars, jagged edges and holes. He laughed.

“You must be joking,” he said. “Compare your heart with mine. Mine is perfect and yours is a mess of scars and tears.”

Three Wooden Crosses

April 12th, 2008

A farmer and a teacher, a hooker and a preacher,
Ridin’ on a midnight bus bound for Mexico.
One’s headed for vacation, one for higher education,
An’ two of them were searchin’ for lost souls.
That driver never ever saw the stop sign.
An’ eighteen wheelers can’t stop on a dime.

There are three wooden crosses on the right side of the highway,
Why there’s not four of them, Heaven only knows.
I guess it’s not what you take when you leave this world behind you,
It’s what you leave behind you when you go.
